When a preview is not a preview?

Cover I find vaguely ironic that the gaming press, en masse, has now decided that the PS3 is going to rule the universe. If you read this or this, you'll realize that the argument is completely based on speculation and "what if" scenarios. In other words, we are fully immersed in that realm of speculative fiction also known as gaming journalism. The gaming press is used to deal with virtual and ethereal stuff - heck, what are previews if not extended infomercial/prophecies? - but this is getting a bit pathetic. The same people that were criticizing the PS3 yesterday are now lauding Sony's strategy. That would be perfectly acceptable if the situation had changed significantly. However, the situation has not changed at all: PS3 games are still released one to two months later than the Xbox 360 and PC versions (if they are coming out at all), they are not technically better (actually, they are often inferior), Home is not out yet, LittleBigPlanet is not out, Killzone 2 is not out, Metal Gear Solid 4 is not out -  Haze is missing in action... None of these games will be available for a while. Singstar PS3 lacks content and support. The PS Store is still dreadful and cumbersome - a far cry from Xbox Live. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is a total rip-off. And yet, PS3 is "reborrn" and "out for a vengeance". Granted, these are the headlines that help sales, but still... I understand that the gaming press needs to invent the best of possible worlds since the present is not that exciting, but this could become counter-productive if the world of tomorrow is not on par with today's predictions. And the internet has a great memory.
