«Papà, giochiamo a Pro Evolution Soccer?»
Italy's best selling national newspaper, Il Corriere della Sera, published a story about a frustrated PS3 buyer (also, a journalist) who decided to immediately sell the console after realizing that it would not run Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and Fifa 2007 (both currently available on the PS2). Titled "Ieri ho comprato la PS3. Oggi la rivendo" (= "Yesterday I bought a PS3. Today, I'm selling it") the story is interesting because this consumer's disappointment is apparently shared by thousands of other players: in a country where electronic gaming and soccer games are synonimous, a long term lack of compatibility with PES6 (aka Winning Eleven in the US and Japan) and FIFA07 would be considered simply unacceptable [Note that the game is currently listed on the Sony's BC site as "working on a PS3 but with significant issues"]. UPDATE: EuroGamer wrote a follow-up story on this topic. The gist: Konami is blaming Sony for the faux pas... [Konami issued a statement saying that the single-player and versus modes in the PS2 PES6 are indeed compatible with PS3, but not the online mode]. Meanwhile, Sony UK's managing director Ray Maguire confirmed that, yes, when it comes to videogames, Europeans get constantly screwed.

UPDATE: More Italian melodrama! Consumer associations are demanding an explanation from Sony about the lack of compatibility with PS2. No, really.
UPDATE: Mattia writes: "You know what, I kinda agree with the consumer association this time. It's really Sony's fault because they went on advertising the console as a new hub with backwards compatibilily. No one forced Sony's PRs to tell everyone that their console would be able to play PS2 games, but they did and it was on all newspapers (see "Affari e finanza" and all other add on of La Repubblica; see TV Sorrisi & Canzoni, La Stampa etc). And when they decided to stip the European version of PS3 of the PS2 hardware, there was a simple mail with minor details and a focus on the huge power of PS3. So even if I find stupid what the journalist did, he could have read something before shelling out 600 euros, part of the blame is on Sony side IMO. Keep up the good work MBF :)"
UPDATE 2 (April 26): The game now works (online mode as well), thanks to the 1.70 firmware. Read more.
