Machinima Event @ Stanford!
Ill Clan Performance Event This event will consist of a live performance by the machinima performance group “the ILL Clan” on Sunday, 4 December in Annenberg Auditorium on the Stanford campus, followed by an in-class panel discussion with the performers in IHUM 57 (“The Human and the Machine”) on 5 December. That same afternoon there will be a scholarly discussion with the ILL Clan moderated by visiting scholars Matteo Bittanti and Henrik Bennetsen, and with guest speaker Michael Nitsche, a new media scholar from Georgia Tech, who has written extensively about machinima. The talk will focus on practical and theoretical issues regarding machinima, film, performance, animation, and mediation. The performance event is specifically intended for students of IHUM 57, but will be open to the Stanford community in general. It is meant to explore the course theme concerning the blurry performative line between avatar and player, between puppeteer and puppet, and, ultimately, between human and machine. This performance will be a unique opportunity for freshmen and upperclassmen alike to see the live west coast premiere of an emerging art form. After a presentation of essays, the scholarly panel in the afternoon of 5 December will allow graduate students and faculty to speak more personally with both the clan and with a machinima scholar.
